Redwood Forest Inkwash Sketch

sumi ink painting on rice paper of redwood tree trunks and a mossy stump

Ink painting with rice paper makes a good warmup for a bigger piece– as soon as the loaded brush hits paper, you are committed to the stroke. Here I am describing the redwood tree trunks as they gather around a mossy stump. There are ferns and lacy undergrowth.

As always with ink painting: what is described in full ink? where is the best place for a diluted wash? How much paper to leave open? This inkwash sketch took place across 10 or 20 minutes. Chinese goat hair brush with bamboo handle.
